About the Ujjain Kumbh

The Kumbh Mela is held at four sacred places in India: Prayagraj, Haridwar, Nashik and Ujjain. At Ujjain it is called the Simhastha Kumbh, because it falls when Jupiter is in Leo (Simha) and the Sun is in Aries. It returns once every 12 years, and the last one here was in 2016.

According to tradition, drops of amrit (the nectar of immortality) fell at Ujjain during the churning of the ocean. During Simhastha, a dip in the Kshipra River is believed to cleanse sins and bring merit.

Ujjain is also one of the oldest holy cities in India, and home to the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga. Many pilgrims combine their holy dip with darshan at its temples.

Good to know

  • The Madhya Pradesh government expects about 14 crore (140 million) devotees across the festival.
  • On Shahi Snan days, the early bathing slots at the main ghats are reserved for the akhadas. Other pilgrims bathe after the processions finish.
  • Vehicle movement inside the city is usually restricted on major bathing days. Plan to travel on foot for the last stretch.

Tips for a smoother Kumbh

Simple things that make a big difference during a very large gathering.

Book early

Rooms around the main bathing days fill up first. Reserve as soon as your dates are known.

Beat the heat

April and May are very hot. Drink plenty of water, wear light cotton, carry a cap or umbrella, and rest in the afternoon.

Bathe after the akhadas

On Shahi Snan days the akhadas bathe first. Plan your dip after their procession, or choose a quieter holy day.

Carry the essentials

Photo ID, a small bag, a change of clothes, water, ORS, any regular medicines, and a power bank.

Stay together in groups

Agree on a meeting point, save each other's numbers, and keep elders and children close in crowds.

Follow official updates

Road closures, parking zones and bathing slots can change. Check announcements before you leave each day.
